Hauts-de-France camping works well for coastal walking and birdwatching, with historic towns and inland forests on separate stages. Le Crotoy is a practical Somme Bay base. Plan tides and guided bay excursions first, then choose a campsite rather than sleeping on an exposed sandbank.
Departments covered by this regional guide
Aisne, Nord, Oise, Pas-de-Calais and Somme.
Natural places to visit
Use the Somme Bay tourism information for Le Crotoy, Saint-Valery-sur-Somme and the Marquenterre area. The coast combines estuary scenery, dunes and bird habitats; access to protected zones and boat or guided-walk bookings is separate from camping.
Elsewhere in the region, consider the Côte d’Opale, Avesnois woodland and the Oise forests as distinct journeys. Do not use a beach walk as an unplanned estuary crossing; the selected itinerary, tide and return point matter.
Camping inside the destination
La Ferme de Mayocq at Le Crotoy offers short-stay pitches in an established base about 2 km from the sea. Reserve directly and ask for opening dates and the touring-equipment category. A campsite booking does not grant camping rights inside the bay’s protected natural areas.
Nearby free camping and authorized bivouac
No specifically authorized free serviced tent campsite was verified for this Somme Bay route. Ask the municipality about a precise alternative and maximum stay, rather than assuming a dune or beach car park is available overnight. Use an approved motorhome area only after confirming that it actually permits occupied overnight stays.
Nearby paid camping: published rates and facilities
The operator’s 2026 nightly list gives adults at €5, a car at €3 and a pitch at €6 outside the stated peak periods or €10 in peak periods. Two adults, pitch and car therefore total €19 or €23 before electricity and any other applicable charges. Electricity adds €6; confirm tourist tax and the complete total.
Showers are listed as included. An off-peak motorhome stop package for two with electricity is displayed at €20, excluding specified peak dates and holiday periods. Confirm eligibility rather than combining that package with separate itemized charges.
Restaurants, museums and cultural stops
Le Bistrot de la Baie, at 5 Rue de la Porte du Pont in Le Crotoy, offers local traditional cooking. Reserve and confirm the day’s menu. The Maison de la Baie de Somme provides nature-focused activities and an interpretation stop; confirm the actual meeting point and access.
Saint-Valery’s streets, maritime heritage and the regional railway make useful complements to a shorter nature day. On a wider route, Amiens, Arras and Lille warrant their own cultural stages and closer overnight bases.
Best season, access, distances and equipment
From Mayocq, allow roughly 2–4 km / 5–15 minutes by road to local Le Crotoy access; Saint-Valery is about 15–20 km / 20–30 minutes via the roads around the bay. Marquenterre access is roughly 10–15 km / 15–25 minutes. These are planning ranges, not walking distances across the estuary.
Spring through early autumn suits ordinary tent camping, with birdwatching interests varying by season. Bring windproof and waterproof layers, sturdy shoes, binoculars, water and tide information. Keep muddy and tidal access separate from ordinary signed coastal paths.
