Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes camping spans very different trips: an Annecy lakeside holiday, an Alpine walking itinerary or a volcanic-landscape road trip in Auvergne. Choose one cluster for each camping base. This guide uses Annecy as a detailed serviced example and distinguishes it from walk-in nights in protected mountains.
Departments covered by this regional guide
Ain, Allier, Ardèche, Cantal, Drôme, Isère, Loire, Haute-Loire, Puy-de-Dôme, Rhône, Savoie and Haute-Savoie. Lyon Métropole has its own territorial administration; use the exact local authority for permissions.
Natural places to visit
Around Lake Annecy, combine lakeshore paths with a weather-appropriate Semnoz outing. In Savoie, Vanoise offers alpine valleys and demanding higher routes. Elsewhere, consider the Chaîne des Puys, Cantal ridges, Ardèche gorges and the Vercors: they require separate bases and their own trail and access checks.
Plan a lake day and a mountain day separately. The time spent reaching a trailhead does not include elevation gain, walking or the return journey. Protected reserve boundaries can change overnight rules within the same massif.
Camping inside the destination
For a tent or touring vehicle, Camping municipal Le Belvédère is an established Annecy base. Its advertised 2026 season ended October 11, and the operator reports closure until March 26, 2027; this is a seasonal reference rather than an available October pitch.
In the Vanoise core, park guidance permits bivouac only beside certain guarded refuges in summer, with reservations, normally 19:00–08:00. It is paid, walk-in accommodation. Some refuges do not allow bivouac at all.
Nearby free camping and authorized bivouac
No specifically verified free serviced tent campground was established for the Annecy base. Obtain permission for a particular alternative; a lakeside car park or a popular lake photograph does not establish a legal pitch. Do not label Vanoise’s reserved refuge bivouacs as free camping.
Nearby paid camping: published rates and facilities
The official tourist listing publishes a 2026 package range of €18–€34.75. The municipal tariff separates tent and caravan/motorhome packages and seasonal bands; ask for the exact combination of occupants, car and electricity, plus tourist tax. This range is not a universal price for every pitch.
Book the equipment category and footprint you actually need. Confirm hot showers, potable water, electrical amperage, disposal for touring vehicles and arrival rules before paying. An apartment, rental-tent or cabin price is a separate accommodation product.
Restaurants, museums and cultural stops
Le Fréti in Annecy’s old town specializes in cheese dishes and works well after a shorter lake outing. Reserve directly and confirm the current menu. The Musée-Château d’Annecy combines historic architecture with regional collections and exhibitions; admission is separate from camping.
Further west, Lyon and Clermont-Ferrand make useful cultural stops on a longer regional route. Treat them as additional bases or transfer days rather than easy excursions from Annecy.
Best season, access, distances and equipment
Late spring to early autumn suits the lake base; higher Alpine walks usually need a summer snow check. From Le Belvédère, estimate about 2–4 km / 10–15 minutes by road to old-town access, and roughly 20–25 km / 35–50 minutes toward Semnoz road access. Choose the exact parking point and add the walk.
Bring waterproofs, warm insulation, grippy shoes, drinking water, offline maps and a headlamp. For longer mountain routes, use a suitable sleeping bag and mat and reserve overnight stops before departure. Storms and remaining snow can make high ground unsuitable for an ordinary day hike.
Reviewed October 13, 2026. Prices are dated published references, not guaranteed quotes. Driving distances and times are broad planning estimates from the stated base; add walking time and confirm current routes, seasonal opening, permissions and booking conditions.
