Canary Islands camping guide. Plan by island first and province second. Las Palmas includes Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote; Santa Cruz de Tenerife includes Tenerife, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro. La Graciosa belongs to the Lanzarote island group. A ferry crossing changes the meaning of “nearby”.
Plan your wider route with our Spain camping guide. This guide covers the region by province. Camping permissions, seasonal access and booking conditions differ by destination.
Las Palmas
Natural places and towns: Gran Canaria combines mountain forests, ravines and beaches; Tejeda and the island’s interior are hiking bases. Lanzarote offers volcanic scenery, Timanfaya visits and the Papagayo coast near Yaiza. Fuerteventura suits wind-exposed beaches and coastal walking. Treat these as separate island itineraries; do not promise lakes or waterfalls on dry-island routes.
Camping inside the destination: Use designated, authorized sites rather than volcanic slopes, dune areas or beach car parks. Papagayo is a managed camping area at Puerto Muelas; its seasonal opening and booking arrangements must be checked with the operator. A national-park day ticket does not include permission to camp.
Nearby free camping: Gran Canaria’s Cabildo has an official permit process for designated camping areas. Verify the selected site’s price, current availability, services, equipment allowed and maximum stay; this guide does not label every municipal or Cabildo area free. No unrestricted free beach-tent option was verified on Lanzarote or Fuerteventura.
Paid camping: Camping El Pinillo in Gran Canaria publishes a non-member caravan/motorhome pitch at €12 plus IGIC per night, with electricity €2.50 per day. Confirm occupant charges, tax total and current validity; tent acceptance was not established by that tariff. Official Lanzarote camping information identifies Papagayo; request current seasonal dates and a resident/non-resident quote instead of assuming one rate applies to everyone.
Restaurants: La Cuevita de Ayagaures in the Ayagaures ravine serves tapas, papas arrugadas and local-style dishes on a Gran Canaria outing. Check the drive from your booked campsite; it is not on Lanzarote or Fuerteventura.
Museums and cultural stops: Gran Canaria: Cueva Pintada in Gáldar and Las Palmas museums. Lanzarote: César Manrique cultural sites. Fuerteventura: Betancuria’s heritage and local museums. Allow separate island stays for these combinations.
Practical information: Mild coastal conditions allow varied seasons, but wind, heat and altitude still matter. Estimate roughly 15–20 km, 25–35 minutes from El Pinillo’s El Sao area to Arguineguín, subject to the chosen route. Papagayo outings use Playa Blanca/Yaiza as local reference towns. Confirm rough-road access, rental-vehicle terms and ferry dimensions. Bring sun protection, ample water and strong pegs.
Santa Cruz de Tenerife
Natural places and towns: Tenerife: combine pinewoods, Anaga trails and Teide’s volcanic landscapes using distinct bases. La Palma: Caldera de Taburiente and forest routes. La Gomera: Garajonay’s laurel forest. El Hierro: volcanic scenery and coastal viewpoints. Conditions and trail closures differ by island.
Camping inside the destination: La Palma’s Caldera de Taburiente camping area requires reservation and a walking approach; it is not a drive-in motorhome site. Consult trail and water conditions with park staff. Teide permits and camping rules must be checked separately.
Nearby free camping: Tenerife’s Cabildo network offers permit-controlled camping, with a published maximum of seven consecutive days; check each Tenerife ON site for permitted tents or vehicles and closures. The network is described as free in this camping overview; confirm any current fee in the official reservation. Carry the authorization. Permission for one named site does not authorize camping throughout the forest.
Paid camping: Camping Nauta in southern Tenerife publishes an example of €30 per night for two adults, a tent and car. Ask about electricity, tax, vehicle dimensions and seasonal changes before booking. It is a coastal-area base rather than a site inside Teide National Park.
Restaurants: Restaurante Vilaflor is in Playa de las Américas, Arona—not the mountain village of Vilaflor. Use it during a southern-Tenerife excursion and confirm the current menu and reservation hours.
Museums and cultural stops: Tenerife: La Laguna’s historic centre and island museums. La Palma: Santa Cruz’s historic streets and museums. La Gomera: San Sebastián’s heritage. El Hierro: local ethnographic interpretation. These are island-specific outings.
Practical information: Coastal camping can suit several seasons; mountain camping needs a warm sleeping system even when the coast is mild. Estimate about 12–15 km, 15–25 minutes from Nauta to Los Cristianos, depending on route and traffic. La Palma’s Caldera campsite instead requires a hiking itinerary; obtain a realistic walking time for your chosen approach from park staff. Carry layers, offline maps and water; check weather, wildfire and trail alerts.
Reservations, prices and equipment
Information checked on October 13, 2026. Published price examples below describe the stated package, not a guaranteed nightly quote. Where a current fixed tariff could not be verified, request a dated quote for your party, tent or vehicle, electricity and pets. Confirm opening dates, vehicle length, pitch access and cancellation terms directly before travel.
Carry a weatherproof tent, suitable sleeping bag and insulated pad, headlamp, first-aid kit, offline map, drinking water and layers. Match footwear and sun protection to your route. Mountain and coastal weather can differ sharply on the same trip.
